Between service visits, your generator lives alone. But monitoring platforms differ more than their brochures admit, and the wrong choice trades a blind spot for a leash.

What remote monitoring actually watches
A monitoring package connects your generator's controller (and ideally your transfer switch) to a cellular or network gateway that reports to a platform watching for:
- Alarms and faults: low coolant, charger failure, fuel leaks, shutdown faults, pushed to phones/email in real time instead of discovered at the next visit
- Not-in-AUTO: the single most preventable cause of failed pickup: someone left the panel in OFF or MANUAL after a service. A monitored unit reports it within minutes; an unmonitored one reports it during the next outage, by staying silent
- Exercise verification: did the weekly/monthly exercise actually run, under load, for how long, with what readings? The platform logs it automatically, which turns your compliance documentation from a clipboard task into a byproduct
- Battery and charger health: the #1 start-failure cause, trending visibly before it fails
- Fuel level: theft, leaks, and runtime-remaining during real outages
- Run status during events: during a storm, you see the unit running (or not) without sending anyone into the weather
What it's worth
Three honest values, in descending order:
1. Closing the between-visits window. The failure modes that strand facilities, dead chargers, not-in-AUTO, coolant leaks, are exactly the ones that develop silently between monthly visits. Monitoring converts weeks of blind exposure into minutes of alert latency. That's the headline value, and for unstaffed or multi-site facilities it's decisive.
2. Automatic compliance records. Monitored exercise logs with timestamps and readings, generated without a human remembering to write them down, reducing exactly the documentation gaps that inspectors write up most. To be clear on the limits: monitoring supplements the required program: it doesn't replace loaded testing, transfer switch operation, or hands-on service. A dashboard has never changed an oil filter.
3. Faster, smarter response. When something does fail, the service provider arrives knowing the fault code, the readings, and the history, first visit with the right parts instead of a diagnostic trip plus a return trip.
The questions to ask before signing up for any platform
This is where monitoring offers differ sharply, and where a little diligence protects you for years:
- "Does it work with my equipment, and my next equipment?" Good monitoring is brand-agnostic, connecting to Generac, Kohler, Cummins, CAT, and mixed fleets alike. A platform that only speaks one manufacturer's language decides your future purchases for you.
- "Who owns my data, and can I export it?" Your run logs and alarm history are your compliance records. If the answer to "can I take my history with me if I change providers?" is no, that's not a monitoring service, that's a switching cost being installed on your roof. - "Is it tied to the service contract?" Some vendors' portals exist primarily to make leaving the vendor painful. Monitoring should make your generator sticky, not your vendor.
- "Who actually watches the alerts?" An unwatched dashboard is a diary. Know whether alerts route to your team, the provider's dispatch, or both, and what the provider commits to do when one fires at 2 a.m.
- "What's the connectivity, and what happens when it drops?" Cellular is the norm (grid-down events take building networks with them); ask about backup power for the gateway itself and how connectivity loss is alerted.
- "What does the ATS see?" Monitoring the engine but not the transfer switch watches half the system. Position and transfer events belong in the picture.
