Peak Hurricane Season Is Now: The 10-Point Generator Readiness Check for Texas Facilities

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, but the Texas Gulf Coast knows the truth in the data: the season peaks from late August through early October: statistically, right now. Every Houston-area facility manager who lived through Harvey's flooding, Beryl's outages, or a Uri-style grid event knows how the story goes: the storm is the test, and the test is open-book only if you did the work beforehand.

Here's the 10-point check we run for facilities before peak season, plus the 72-hour runbook for when a named storm enters the Gulf.

The pre-season 10-point check

1. Run a real load test: recently. Not "it starts." A generator that hasn't carried meaningful load in months is an unknown. If your last load bank test is more than a year old, or your monthly runs never load the engine, get one on the calendar this month, while service calendars still have room.

2. Fuel: quantity AND quality. Full tanks, tested fuel. Stored diesel in Texas heat and humidity grows water and microbial contamination that clogs filters exactly when the engine is working hardest. If your fuel hasn't been lab-tested in the past year, test it now; polish or treat if it fails. Know your burn rate at expected load, and do the honest math: a tank that runs the building for 30 hours is not a plan for a 5-day outage.

3. Line up resupply before you need it. During a regional event, fuel delivery becomes the constraint, priority goes to contracted customers, hospitals, and first responders. If you don't have a fuel resupply arrangement, make one in September, not in the forecast cone.

4. Exercise every transfer switch. The ATS is the single point where backup power actually reaches your building. Monthly operation is the requirement (the full schedule); pre-season is the time to catch the switch that hums, hesitates, or hasn't been cycled since spring.

5. Batteries and block heater. Starting batteries are the #1 cause of failure-to-start. Load test them (a voltage reading is not a load test), check charger output, and confirm the block heater works, Gulf storms drag cool fronts and long wet nights behind them.

6. Walk the site like a storm. Anything that can become airborne near the generator, secure it. Confirm louvers and air paths are clear, enclosure hardware is intact, and, critical on the coast, the unit sits above expected flood level. A running generator in two feet of water is a former generator. If flooding is a known risk at your site, the mitigation conversation needs to happen before the season, not during the surge forecast.

7. Check your service coverage. Storm aftermath is when contract customers get dispatched first and everyone else gets a waitlist. Know what your agreement actually promises for emergency response, and if you've let coverage lapse, understand what that costs during an event and fix it while it's fixable.

8. Stage spares. Fuel filters (multiple: contaminated fuel eats them in hours), oil, coolant, belts. During a regional event, the parts counter 40 minutes away might as well be in another state.

9. Print the runbook. Startup, transfer, shed non-essential loads, monitoring checks, shutdown, on paper, at the machine, readable by whoever is actually on site when it happens. The person who knows the generator best is statistically the person on vacation during the storm.

The 72-hour runbook (named storm in the Gulf)

  • T-72 hours: Top off fuel. Run the generator under load one final time, long enough to reach full operating temperature. Correct anything it reveals immediately; you have three days of service availability left, then none.
  • T-48: Confirm fuel resupply standing. Stage spares and the runbook. Verify ATS in AUTO, chargers on, block heater on. Photograph the installation (insurance documentation while everything is intact).
  • T-24: Final site walk: secure loose items, check drainage paths around the pad, confirm staffing plan for who's on site.
  • During: Monitor remotely if you have it; do not send people to a running generator in dangerous conditions. Log run hours and any alarms.
  • After: Inspect before you relax: hot engine + storm debris + standing water is when careless things happen. Check air paths for debris, fuel levels and condition (storm-agitated tanks stir up sediment, watch the filters), and schedule a post-event service if the unit ran more than a day. Extended runs advance the maintenance clock regardless of the calendar.

The Texas footnote that isn't about hurricanes

Coastal facilities plan for storms; the 2021 freeze taught the whole state that Texas grid risk is a year-round, statewide condition, summer conservation alerts included. Everything on this list except the storm-specific items is really just a maintenance program doing its job in every season. Facilities that treat readiness as a September scramble do the same work with worse timing and no leverage.
