Backup power in Waco
Waco’s critical load is a mix that rewards a properly maintained standby plant: aerospace, healthcare, food and beverage distribution, a major university and a city water system. L3Harris runs an aircraft modification center at Waco with more than a million square feet of engineering, manufacturing and widebody hangar space, working on Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard aircraft. Next to it, Texas State Technical College operates its own airport, the largest owned and run by a two-year public college in the country, and trains aviation maintenance and avionics there.
The consumer side is growing on the I-35 corridor: Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages opened a 120,000 square foot distribution center in Waco in February 2025, the kind of refrigerated and automated facility where a transfer failure costs product as well as hours. Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest carries 260 beds and a neonatal intensive care unit. Baylor University enrolled close to 20,000 students in fall 2025. The city’s Central Wastewater Treatment Plant runs at 45 million gallons a day and serves half a dozen surrounding communities from about 970 miles of mains and 70 lift stations.

Storms, floods and the statewide grid
Waco knows what severe weather costs. The 1953 tornado remains one of the deadliest in American history, with 114 dead and downtown utilities destroyed. More recently, May 2024 was the wettest month in the city’s record: McLennan County declared a disaster on 3 May, Lake Waco rose more than fifteen feet above normal, and roughly 16,000 county customers lost power in storms with winds above fifty miles an hour. February 2021 added the statewide layer, when ERCOT ordered rolling blackouts and Oncor, the wires company here, was among those directed to shed load. Summer peaks have stayed at that level since: ERCOT set a record 85,508 MW in August 2023, and August 2024 came within a hundred megawatts of it at 85,425 MW without passing it.
How we cover Waco
Work in Waco is dispatched from Bryan / College Station, about 1 hr 45 min away, and quoted with that drive in it. Scheduled work, installations, load bank testing and preventive maintenance are planned around it, so a visit is a fixed date rather than a guess. What we will not do is promise you a same-day emergency truck the way we can in the metros where we keep a branch: distance is distance, and you should hear that before you sign, not during an outage.
Maintenance customers get priority dispatch, which is the practical reason most facilities this far from a branch put their units on a contract. Our technicians are factory trained across major makes, and the same NFPA 110 documentation, load bank reports and fuel testing come with the work here as anywhere else in Texas.
Waco questions
Do I need an air permit for a standby generator in Texas?
Usually you operate under a state permit by rule rather than a bespoke permit. TCEQ’s rule for portable, emergency and standby engines, 30 TAC 106.511, carries no registration fee, but the site has to meet the general conditions and keep a rolling twelve months of compliance records on site. That record keeping is part of what a maintenance contract should be producing for you anyway.
How quickly can you get to Waco in an emergency?
We are about an hour and three quarters away in Bryan / College Station, and we will tell you that up front rather than promise a truck in the next hour. Planned work is unaffected by the drive. For a facility that cannot tolerate a wait, a maintenance contract with priority dispatch, remote monitoring and a tested plant is a better answer than a promise nobody can keep.
Is there a noise limit on generators in Waco?
The city sets maximum permissible sound levels measured at the receiving property line, under chapter 16 of its code of ordinances. Enclosure selection and siting are the practical levers, and they are much cheaper to get right at specification than after an install. We check the limit for your address and zoning before quoting.
